Dictionary

AFK [ay:ef:kay]
This is short for “Attack, Fight, Kill” and if you see someone in your team or raid group typing it, it means that he is encouraging you to battle on. Especially if it’s a tank or healer.

Balance [bah:lanz]
When something needs a balance, usually it is something that isn’t working as intended. Like druids. The issue is likely resolved by “balancing it” which can sometimes be seen as a compromise solution so all involved parts are happy. Balance can also have a slightly different meaning, see Cycle of Life.

BG Week [EZ:honor]
Occasionally a specific battleground yields more honor. This means you should try to rush, zerg or moan about things.

Rogues complain about Retri Paladins.
Retri Paladins hate Shattering Throw.
Shamans complain about themselves

This is what we know as the Cycle of Life or more commonly Balance.

DK [dee:kay]
Before a change was made, you would recieve a dishonorable kill for each enemy NPC civilian you or your party killed. This had a significant negative impact on your current PvP rank, which decayed. See the pun? These days, it means a deathknight is near you.

Drain Team [hax]
This is a description that covers an arena team with the sole purpose of gaining a victory, by draining the oppositions’  mana, and then unleashing major damage on an unfortunate target. As an example Warlock, Priest and Hunter are classes with mana draining capabilities and can be found in these setups. This was popular in season 3. Suggested counters include melee-only teams.

Gank [Ga:engk]

This is short for “Oh My Gnoll” and is an often used phrase in mating rituals.

OP [ouh:pi]
OP is short for overpowered. When something is overpowered, it means that a patch is most likely on it’s way to resolve the issue. When someone complains about something that is overpowered, it means that the person probably lacked the  skills, gear or basic understanding of game mechanics needed to overcome the issue.

Rank [rahnk]
Before the system was removed by Blizzard, players could dedicate time to gain a PvP Rank. The ranks spun from rank 1 – Private to rank 14 – Grand Marshal(Alliance) and High Warlord (Horde). Depending on the server population and dedication, it could take you more than half a year to go from rank 1 to rank 13. The indication of being rank 14 meant that from rank 13, you had PvP’ed around 16-18 hours a day, 7 days a week for roughly a month, competing for top standing among all the other pvp’ers on the server. Ranks could decay however, so you were not allowed a single day’s pause if you wanted to reach rank 14. This why many PvP’ers with the old titles moan when PvP’ers without the titles, desire obtaining them in a relaxed manner.

Resilience [will fix it]
Resilience is a term that got introduced with ‘The Burning Crusade’ for the PvP aspect of the game, to create a larger difference between the raiding community and the PvP’ers. In the old days, raid gear was superior to PvP gear, but resilience made a difference by making it more difficult to land a critical hit and reducing damage taken. It also had some complications however, due to scaling with high HP and low mana.
